How to Sell by Weight on Farmhand

Release Date:
May 12, 2026

Sell meat (or anything variable-weight) with an initial charge based on package size and a final adjustment after weighing.

Before you start: Decide if you want à la carte one-time orders, credit-based recurring orders, or both.

  1. List the product in Products with a package size price (e.g., "Ground Beef — 1 lb package — $12").
  2. Customer checks out at the listed price — that's the initial charge.
  3. After you weigh and pack the actual product, open the order and issue an adjustment: either a credit (you charged too much) or a charge (you charged too little).
  4. Alternatively, set the product up as a credit-based subscription: customer pays for a bundle of credits up front and redeems against any cut as they go.

Success: customer's final invoice shows the original charge plus the weight adjustment line item — they see exactly what they got.

⚠️ What to know

  • Charge is immediate; adjustment is after. Customer pays at order time based on listed package size. Farmhand can't hold the charge until you weigh — that's a manual reconcile step on your end.
  • Credit-based ordering is its own model. Better for recurring meat customers who don't want to be charged per package. Configure as a subscription that issues credits.
  • You can offer both. Same product can be sold à la carte (one-time) AND as a credit-based recurring share — the customer picks at signup.
