Deep Roots Farm in Maryland is a regenerative, Black woman-owned farm dedicated to growing healthy food and community. When Gale launched her CSA, she started with just 60 members, using manual tools like Google Maps and software that didn’t meet her needs. Despite her clear vision and deep dedication, the backend systems were holding her back. Labels were constantly wrong, picklists had to be edited by hand, and software like Barn2Door made even simple tasks feel complicated.
Before Farmhand
Gale was stuck spending hours on fulfillment logistics and customer communication. She’d pull over during deliveries to enter addresses or text members. Writing newsletters and replying to emails—tasks essential to member retention—rarely happened simply because there wasn’t time. “I’m great with numbers,” she said, “but I’m not a great writer—and I didn’t know how to consistently communicate with members.”
That changed when she partnered with Farmhand.
Taking the Leap
Farmhand brought instant relief. Fulfillment became “plug and play”—click to print packlists, click to print labels, no editing needed. Routing was fully automated, and delivery logistics no longer required pulling over mid-route. The built-in communications tools allowed Gale to stay in touch with her members through newsletters and updates, keeping them engaged and informed.
When a potential new pickup site reached out, Farmhand had it live in a day—and it brought in 20 new members instantly. That kind of responsiveness used to take weeks, if it happened at all.
Results That Speak for Themselves
Since switching to Farmhand, Deep Roots Farm has grown from 60 to over 200 CSA members. Local search traffic exploded—from just over 1,000 visits per month to more than 6,000—all from customers nearby. “I’m not kidding, I get a call every single day from a new customer,” Gale said. “I’m not sure what kind of magic you’re working, but it’s working.”
Gale now has support she can delegate to—from marketing to customer service—and that’s led to real, trackable growth. During a recent plant sale, she sent an Excel list of offerings to the Farmhand team, and within a day the online store was updated, an email was launched, and sales topped $1,000 in just one week.
Looking Ahead
With Farmhand saving her time and supporting her growth, Gale finally has space to focus on her dream: building out agritourism. This year, she booked 7–8 farm tours and events, brought in new revenue, and invested back into the land and her team. “This has hit the bottom line hard—in a beautiful way,” she said.
